In Siena, which is commonly described as a Gothic city, the Renaissance has usually been considered a marginal period when compared with the Florentine splendor. Specifically, in Siena the first half of the fifteenth century has long been considered a time of both absolute decadence and crisis in the demographic, political, economic, and social spheres. This book summarizes in a conversational style the reasons that period must be reassessed.
