In discussing so wide a theme it is difficult to avoid digressions and an appearance of dogmatism with regard to issues which are often obscure. My hope is that the main drift of the argument IS lucid, and that its conclusions are expressed with a caution not unworthy of the eminent authorities to whose labours I am indebted.
