In Vedanta philosophy it indicates expression of individual soul through five sheaths (koshas). These sheaths are nothing but levels of existence of an individual. The atman (soul) is ever-shining consciousness, perfect and complete, having no limits and without beginning or end. However it illuminates through layers of these sheaths.
