Of the absolute nature of either mind or matter we can have no definite idea, we know them only by their properties: these are so different as to lead, perhaps universally, to the division of general sciences into two great classes corresponding to the two objects of contemplation, viz. Metaphysics, the science of mind, and Natural Philosophy, the science of matter.
