Excerpt from Eleventh Annual Report of the State Board of Health of the State of New Hampshire for the Year Ending October 31, 1892The railroad companies of New Hampshire have, within the past few years, taken considerable interest in the sanitary condition of their stations and grounds. Within the past five years a very decided improvement in this direction has taken place along all of our lines of railways. It is now the policy of the leading railroads of the State to maintain clean stations with attractive grounds, and, to secure such a result, at least two of the prominent lines have offered prizes to the station agents who keep their grounds in the most attractive condition. Improvements are being constantly made. The Concord Montreal railroad has during the past year not only built several new stations of the most modern design and construction, but has greatly improved many of the old ones. A like progress has been made by the Boston Maine rail~ road, and the Maine Central, which operates many miles of road in the northern part of the State.
