Excerpt from Essay on the Irregularities of the Teeth: With Special Reference to a Theory of Causation and the Principles of Prevention and TreatmentMy studies had so thoroughly convinced me that acquired characters were not transmitted, I felt that some other explanation could be made which would account for the diminution in size of the' jaws and for the irregularities of the teeth. The explanation, however, did not come at first. At last the idea struck me that there might be an intimate relation between the size and growth of the tongue and the size and development of the jaws, and that this would best explain the facts without any assumption of the inheritance of acquired characters.
