Excerpt from Fifteenth Census of the United States, 1930: Agriculture, Chickens and Chicken Eggs and Turkeys, Ducks, and Geese Raised on Farms, Chickens and Poultry Products, With Selected Items by Size of Flock, for the United States, States, and Counties, 1930 and 1929For census purposes a farm is all the land directly farmed by one person either by his Own labor or with the aid Of his family or hired help. When a landowner had one or more tenants, renters, croppers, or managers, the land Operated by each was considered a farm. Also, if agricultural commodities Worth $250 were produced, the operation was considered as a farm even if less than 3 acres Of land were occupied.This point is especially important, as many poultry operations, conducted on small tracts Of land, were Of sufficient magnitude to qualify as farms although not popularly SO designated. City and village operations which did not produce $250 worth Of poultry and eggs, Or which did not fall within the farm definition because Of other farm activities, are not included.In regard to the classification it must be noted that the Size groups were based on the number Of chickens On hand over 3 months Old, April 1, 1930, while all production items were for the year 1929.
