The lectures from which the following monograph is condensed, have grown out of an attempt to comply v/ith the request of the Committee of the Master Car-builders Association to present the well-known facts, and others that had been determined by the lecturer relating to the subject, in a lecture at the rooms of that association in New York, December 20th, 1877.
