Combining the combat history of the 1944 campaign for Normandy with the histories of science, technology, and culture, GI Ingenuity shows how the American soldier improvised, innovated, and adapted technology on the battlefield. Among the improvisations and technologies covered are tanks equipe d with hedgerow cutters, the coordination of air and ground attacks, and the use of radio communication and aircraft to direct artillery fire all of which contributed to American success on D-Day and afterwards.
