Give Them the Bayonet!: A Guide to the Battle for Henry Hill, July 21, 1861: A Walking Tour

Give Them the Bayonet: A Guide to the Battle for Henry Hill, July 21, 1861 is the second book in White Mane's A Walk in Time Series. This is, however, the first guide ever developed for defining the fight on Henry Hill, July 21, 1861. Although a complicated and serious battle, it was quickly overshadowed by many of the larger conflicts during the American Civil War. Yet, it is here, where the first great contest occurred, that both sides learned the seriousness of war. Twenty maps, numerous personal accounts, and descriptive narration aid the reader/visitor in reconstructing and understanding the chaos which reigned in this area (outlined by five recommended stops). On Sunday, July 21, 1861, the Confederate and Union armies fought for two and a-half hours (1:30 p.m. -- 4:00 p.m.) on Henry Hill. Fifteen Union regiments and thirteen Confederate regiments charged and countercharged to capture the prized Union cannon caught in the middle of the fury. The action seesawed in the pall of smoke and deadening musket volley, opposing lines fought so close that the soldiers could hear the orders for their deaths. One Wisconsin captain shouted, "Give it to 'em boys!" "Give it to 'em!" "Down with their accursed flag!" The Confederates yelled back, "Kill them!" "Mow them down, the Northern Abolition sons of bitches!" "Give them no quarter!"By 4:00 p.m. the Confederates rushed onto the hill and the disorganized Union units retreated. In the end 1, 452 Americans lay killed or wounded in and around the plateau, including one civilian, Mrs. Judith Henry.
