Excerpt from Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives, Vol. 2

When Professor Colder in 1913 collected in St. Petersburg the materials printed in his Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives, published by the Institution in 1917, his permissions to examine materials in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not extend beyond 1853. At the time of his later visit, in 1917, when he spent some months in the then capital of Russia, he was allowed to pursue his quest for such materials, and his taking of notes in those archives, through the year 1870. The notes then accumulated are now printed in this supplementary volume. Dr. Golder, professor of history in Stanford University from 1921 on, died there in 1929, greatly regretted by all who appreciate intelligent scholarship and high character.
