Excerpt from Hamilton College: Historical Discourse

Nearly seventy years have passed away since yonder eminence witnessed a scene which its results have invested with a deep historic interest. A company of pioneers had gathered, amidst the forest that then clothed its summit, to lay the corner stone of Hamilton Oneida Academy, The position chosen for the establishment of this Institution was remarkable. It was near the geographical center of this State, soon to take and maintain the first rank among its sisters in the Union. A few rods east ran the Line of Property, which divided the retiring barbarism of the Aborigines from the incoming civilization of the Anglo-American.
