Excerpt from Health in the Tropics: Or Sanitary Art Applied to Europeans in India

No less authority than Ranald Martin has advanced the decided opinion, that a Sanitary Manual, containing in a clear and concise form the great truths and principles of hygiene and sanitary art, should be published "by authority, " and become the guide of both military and medical officers.

In conversation with many gentlemen of both classes, the absence of such a work has been allowed to be an existing want.

A volume on some such plan as the one now deferentially offered (perhaps, however, requiring some deductions, and certainly wanting additions), appears calculated to obviate the deficiency. And to make the work complete, the obsolete and standing orders relative to each subject, together with the reasons for the abolishment of the former and the publication of the latter, should follow their appropriate chapters, or otherwise be placed in an appendix.

I at first intended to have added these orders and references, but at an up country station there are not facilities for such a compilation.

Time, and the sanction of authority to search records, would be required before all such regulations could be searched out and methodised.
