Hebrew Criticism and Poetry

Clarke, George Somers

Hebrew Criticism and Poetry

Excerpt from Hebrew Criticism and Poetry: Or the Patriarchal Blessings of Isaac and Jacob

Invocation

To the Light of Learning.

Progessive light of learning's ripenning age!
Expand thy broadest lustre o'er my page!
Dispel each mist of ignorance and pride,
And bid the bigots ancient rage subside!
Unveil to mortal eyes thine hidden store,
And clear from error's blot religion's lore!
Before thy votary spread thy noontide day
Through paths, where great Cappellus led the way!
Where, his bold track to follow not intent,
Hare, Seeker, Green, Lowth, Blayney, Newcome, went!
Where close pursuit rewards the critic's toil:
Where richly scatter'd lies barbarian spoil!
Bid thou thy blaze, to sainted sires unknown,
Mark each prophetic meaning for thine own.
But let thy votary scorn the mystic sense,
Of daring ignorance the vain pretence!
