Hippolytus is the most admired drama by Euripides. The classic theme of a married woman who develops feelings for a younger man was altered and combined by Euripides with a tale of divine wrath to produce a masterpiece of suspense, anguish, and dramatic impact. In this drama, Phaedra bravely battles her desire for her stepson Hippolytus but is ultimately unsuccessful, and the young man puts his life in danger to conceal his love for her.
