The Gaelic word Aber also signifies strength, and the term has thus been applied to denote capital cities, such as Aberdeen, Abernethy, &c., The history of Arbroath must, to a great extent, be sought for in the records of its Abbey, as, previous to its erection, the history Of the place, if not fabulous, must be to a great extent matter of inference. In fact, there is no reference to its existence as a town or village earlier than the reign of King William, although the Church of St. Vigeans is mentioned as existing nearly two centuries prior to the foundation of the Abbey.
