Excerpt from History of the Saratoga Monument AssociationThe trustees held several meetings, and selected the spot upon which to erect the monument. But the breaking out of the civil war in 1861 cast such a gloom over the whole country, and taxed the patriotic energies of the people to such an extent, that the movement to build the monument was suspended up to the year 1872, during which time several of the original trustees had died.
