Excerpt from History of the State of Delaware, Vol. 1 of 3With an extreme length from north to south of ninety-six miles, and a breadth varying from thirty-five miles at the widest part to less than ten at the narrowest, the territory of the State of Delaware comprises a total of square miles, or acres, bordered by Pennsylvania on the north, by Maryland on the west and south, and the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware bay and river on the east. The State is divided into three counties - New Castle, Kent and Sussex - each ex tending from its eastern to its western boundary, and all with township subdivisions called Hundreds.
