How the ¿ Got Producted

A childhood trauma leaves N. emotionally stalled but yearning for connection. When a seductive but damaged young attorney responds to her personal ad, she falls hard, overlooking his curious technology vendetta, fear of intimacy, and dark past. Their one-sided affair ends abruptly when her lover ghosts her, she later learns, to marry another woman and run for elective office. Adrift but resilient, N. mines a series of seemingly random hookups for the raw materials she uses to reinvent herself as a prominent lobbyist for the biomedicaltechnology industry. She hones a "special skill set"-namely, moral relativism-that lands her at the top of her field. Her infamy draws the attention of a shadowy bureaucrat who recruits her to squash an insurgency led by anti-technology dissidents at the Bureau of Biomedicaltechnology. Once installed at the Bureau, N. encounters the ¿, a technology to improve human connectedness, which the dissidents want to keep from the American consumer. N. throws herself into her assignment, surveilling the dissidents, upending regulatory procedures, and meddling in the plot to suppress the groundbreaking invention. But the Bureau is leaky, and the dissidents have an ally in a U.S. senator and crusading presidential candidate who happens to share a secret past with N. Their confrontation pits the regulatory state against big tech in a battle to a draw, settles an old romantic score, and clears the way for the ¿ to change the world forever. How the ¿ Got Producted is a satirical fever dream, a citizen-consumer's trippy meditation on gadgetry and the self, and a slyly feminist take on the Kafkaesque for the postmodern technocracy, all wound around the axle of a love story that isn't.
