Excerpt from Indiana School Journal, 1894, Vol. 39: Organ of the State Teachers' Association, and of the Superintendent of Public InstructionUsually, when a discovery has been made, many are surprised that it had not been made before and frequently accuse themselves of stupidity for not having made the discovery themselves.After reading Mr. Hoffman's article in the November journal, many Hoosier schoolmasters have doubtless felt a little blush of shame for having allowed him to be the first to discover so apparent a defect in our long accepted theory of intermittent springs. Mr. Hoffman has certainly made a discovery of great consequence in having discovered that there is something to discover. As to the new theory, however, we think there is a better one than that which he has given. We do not think it necessary to entirely discard the old theory but only to call attention to one factor in the process Of the inter mittent spring which seems to have been overlooked and add to the already familiar explanation.
