Yielding to the wishes of friends, perhaps too readily, I am including in this book certain papers that are far from finished in form, and one at least that is not checked and tested in content. My excuse is that comple tion is beyond my present competence. These imperfect papers neverthe less exhibit significant trends in modern research. Since my work is in growth without pretense of final achievement, this may be as it should be. Let us Wish for the best.
