A man is out of work and applies for relief. In nine cases out of ten he is offered the Workhouse. What does this mean It means that he loses his house no small thing in these days. He also loses his furniture. What happens to him when he comes out of the Workhouse? The man has to find work and at the same time find a home and furniture for his family. The Poor Law Authority won't allow the man out first to look for work, the family must all go out together. Supposing, however, they are granted relief. What is the amount of relief granted P Now the Poor Law Authority of my district is by no means one of the worst, in fact I think it can be described as one of the best Boards of Guardians, taking a reasonably modern view of its duties, so that the general position is really worse than the recital of the following cases which have come recently under my notice, would suggest.
