Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Sanitary Institute, Vol. 43: January, 1923Provision is now made by the State, with but few gaps in the chain, for caring for the health of every unit of the community from his conception to his demise.Curative medicine still bulks largely, however preventive medicine has not yet come into its own.For children suffering from the effects of mal-nutrition and poor environ ment, treatment such as is provided at convalescent homes on the coast or in the country is most appropriate.Such treatment may be provided by the Local Authority direct, or through the agency of a voluntary institution. In the latter event the Ministry of Education allows contributions to rank for grant. The same arrangements are applicable in relation to crippled children for whom surgical appliances are necessary to enable then to attend school.For minor deformities remedial exercises, given under the supervision of an expert, are proving effective.The work of school - dentists is now showing good results and is bringing into prominence the necessity for treatment and advice at an earlier period than school-age. Health-visitors Should be required to note and report the earliest manifestations of dental destruction or deformity, in order that the appropriate treatment may be afforded in time.The complicating conditions that call for operation for enlarged tonsils and adenoids are generally recognised. In the absence of these is operation justifiable?
