IN presenting this thoroughly revised edition, the author has endeavored to make the laboratory experiments touch more closely upon present-day problems than was possible in the first edition. It has been the aim to treat the subject in such a manner that the processes described for applica tion on a small scale can also be adopted to the larger commercial basis. Thus, in many instances, it will be noticed that the methods are those in common use at the present time, and, Whenever possible, actual factory prac tice has been followed. The object, therefore, is to acquaint the student of chemistry with actual commercial problems by bringing to his experience practical methods of hand ling materials on a large scale, the care and use of machinery, the cost of raw materials, transportation, wage system, the handling of men, and shop discipline.

This idea is being carried out at Pratt Institute through a foremanship system of instruction, in which groups of students are assigned to work in model plants, one member of each group acting as foreman. The foreman is held responsible for the quality as well as the quantity of the output of his plant, must see that the machinery is left in perfect condition, and that the factory is kept clean.
