Excerpt from Lake George, (Illustrated): A Book of to-Day

Thanks are due (in the first edition, as is custom ary) to many kind friends for help in bringing it to a head, and especially to Dr. A. W. Holden, the historian, for valuable assistance in the partien lar branch which has been his life study and as such to be relied on.

Prefaces are detestable and seldom read, but if nothing was created in vain the writer hopes, by putting this excuse among the legitimate reading matter, that some absent minded ones may possibly struggle through to the end before discovering their mistake, and thus become acquainted with a few of the reasons, and perhaps think kindly of him who now bids farewell to earthly fears, and wades shiveringly into the surging sea of literature.
