Latinx

Aperture's "Latinx" issue, guest edited by curator Pilar Tompkins Rivas, will explore how photography by Latinx artists offers a complex understanding of experiences across ethnicity, class, and gender in the United States. The issue presents images that span the nineteenth century to the present, and delves into the image records of political resistance, social spaces, and youth culture and nightlife through essays on the Chicano Movement, Reynaldo Rivera, and Laura Aguilar's influence on queer image making. Chon Noriega's sweeping article about the avant-garde and Yxta Maya Murray's expansive look at curators and writers archiving Latinx photo history address essential figures whose work hasn't yet been sufficiently studied or recognized. A series of sumptuously reproduced portfolios will be dedicated to a new generation of photographers, including Genesis Báez, Sofía Córdova, Steven Molina Contreras, Bibs Moreno, and Marton Robinson. By championing the work of photographers who bring visibility to Latinx culture, this issue of Aperture magazine will offer a generous vision for the many different ways of seeing American life today.
