Set in the Parisian underworld of the 1800s, Les Misrables follows the adventures of Jean Valjean, an honest peasant imprisoned for nineteen years. A hardened criminal upon his release, an act of compassion causes him to change his ways. Haunted by his past, Valjean is pursued relentlessly by the Inspector Javert, who does not believe in moral redemption.
