The words of George Frederick Ruxton have come to epitomise the life of the far westerners, the mountain men and trappers who lived often short but thrilling and exotic lives among and fighting against the warriors of the great Indian tribes of North America. He had fought as a lancer in the Spanish Civil War of the early nineteenth century and served as an officer in the 89th Foot of the British Army in Canada.
