Low Vision Research and Training Center

Excerpt from Low Vision Research and Training Center: Final Report, 1982The need for low vision research training activities is great. First, the low vision population, for far too long has been treated as either totally blind or totally sighted and since 80 to 90 percent of the 11.a million visually impaired has low vision, they are an underserved population. Second, many of those with low vision are older or elderly. With a trend towards an older worker population nationwide, vision problems concomitant with the aging process are most important for research. Third, vision affects communication (written and verbal) and mobility, both of which are essential to independent living and successful employment. Fourth, the fact that low vision persons are frequently given rehabilitation protocols designed for the totally blind underlines a serious deficiency in the area of training. Only when substantial revisions are made in preservice and inservice training will those serving clients feel comfortable with low vision services.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
