Excerpt from Lyrics of Life
Childhood, Love, and Death.
Ye who have wandered thro' the faery fields
Of innocent childhood, till ye reach'd the land
Where Love takes Youth by the unreluctant hand,
And leads him to the rough paths that demand
Keen eye, and wary heart, and firmer stand,
E'en for the lordly soul that never yields
To passionate impulse: ye who learn to see
In Death no terror, but a glorious way,
Illumed by Eden-sunlights, and a ray
From God-lit realms of never-ending day, -
I too have wandered o'er that checquered lea,
And somewhat seen, and suffered thoughtfully,
Retraverse, gentle hearts, the wondrous path with me!
