Magic

Magic: In which are given clear and concise explanations of all the well-known illusions, as well as many new ones here presented for the first time, is the work of one of England's greatest magicians. Written specifically for the experienced amateur and professional alike, this work reveals the secret principles behind 104 magic effects ranging from small do-it-yourself stunts through to stage illusions.

The principles contained in this book are still in use by the world's conjurers today. The book starts with sleight of hand, coin magic, silk magic, billiard ball routines, production effects (mainly from hats, even though the author foresaw the possibility that top hats would go out of fashion!) mentalism (including some classic "anti-spiritualistic" psychic-busting effects), impromptu after-dinner tricks, an impressive range of parlor and party prestidigitations, and the principles behind some large stage illusions. The book ends off with a brief overview of the physical mechanics-and examples of-the art of shadowgraphy.

Also included are tips on presentation, accessories-and even instructions on how to make your own flash paper and other chemistry-based effects.
This new edition has been completely reset and contains all the original illustrations, hand restored to modern standards.

William Ellis Stanyon (1870-1951), was born in Leicestershire, England, and started his first periodical known as 'Stanyon's Serials' in 1899. A year later he published-edited Stanyon's Magic. In the first issue of that journal, he stated that it was intention to "popularize the Art of Sleight of Hand." He succeeded, and his fame spread across the Atlantic to America, where this book was first published.
