In fact it's been called harsh, which I don't deny, but in writing it I've tried hard not to whitewash the darker, more selfish side of BDSM as it's been played out on the English scene over the last half-century. The characters and incidents are drawn from my own experiences - of the British public school system, of London life and of BDSM - now stretching back over more than thirty years, mixed in with influence from scandals and less well known but equally shocking events.
