Martin Luther in Catholic Historiography

Excerpt from Martin Luther in Catholic Historiography: Four Centuries of German Scholarship, Independent Study, Chaplain Officer Advanced Course, 12 December, 1991Cochlaeus turned aga1nst Luther and set out to d1scred1t h1s movement and defame h1s memory. In a b1tter and s1anderous attack, Cochlaeus used rumor to d1scred1t the Reformer's character. The author argued that Luther, as an August1n1an monk, was jealous of the 1ucrat1ve 1ndu19ence trade enjoyed by tetzet and the Dom1n1cans. Hence the quarret over 1ndu19ences had no theo]og1oa1 or morat foundat1on because 1t was based upon Luther's greed.5 In add1t1on to be1ng jea10us, greedy, and quarre]some, Luther was also 1ncred1b1y 1mmora1. At the age of f1fteen he 1ndu19ed 1n 1111c1t sex w1th h1s benefactress, Frau cotta zu Eisenach.6 As a young August1n1an monk, he 11ved 1n oonoub1nage w1th three nuns, dur1ng wh1ch t1me he a11eged1y contracted venereal d1sease.7 For Coch1aeus, Luther's ooncept1on was the fru1t of a un1on between Satan and Luther's mother who 1ater regretted not hav1ng murdered h1m 1n the oradte.8 Thus the leader of the Protestant Reformat1on was the ch11d of Satan.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
