To escape the painful reminders of the death of her fiancé, artist Kate Greenway flees Mountain View to work in a florist shop in Millvale. A year later she takes up her palette and brushes again to fulfill a life-long dream of becoming a professional artist. Blythe Chambers, a motherless little girl, introduces her to the song of the wind blowing through the blue spruce in a meadow, and to her uncle Jack. Kate is ready to move forward with her life and love, but the tragic deaths of loved-ones leaves Jack fearful of commitment to Kate. Kate reminds Jack that the Master Potter can create something new of the broken pieces of their lives. Kate returns to Mountain View to help care for her mother who is battling cancer. Setting, both location and season/year: Set mostly in Millvale, a small town. At one time several mills had been in Millvale. Behind the Mill Pond Diner is a pond that had been the millrace for one of the mills. The story begins in late April, when Kate meets Blythe and Jack at the meadow. Kate's relationship with Jack develops during the summer in and around Millvale. Kate returns to her hometown, Mountain View, late in August to help care for her mother. Jack opens his own computer business in Millvale. Kate remains in Mountain View for the fall and winter. In the spring she begins to sell her paintings, Jack proposes to her during the summer, and they get married in the fall.
