But we recoiled from the idea of pursuing such a course. We were told, indeed, that we owed this to the Christian world, but we felt that we had a prior and paramount duty to discharge toward himself, We were sufficiently alive to the espionage practised under despotic govern ments abroad, to have contracted a peculiar distaste for all that could seem like an invasion of the sanctities of home.
