Michel Angelo Buonarroti, Sculptor, Painter, Architect

Excerpt from Michel Angelo Buonarroti, Sculptor, Painter, Architect: The Story of His Life and Labors

When the name of Michel Angelo is spoken, ideas and images of grandeur arise. It is a case in which the name promises the man, and the man fulfils the power of the name. Doubtless many an Italian, many a Florentine, before and since, bore that name, for it was and is the custom in those countries especially to name children after saints and angels. They are the home of saints in number altogether beyond other countries, just as they are the home of cardinals, because the Roman Church has had its abode in the midst of them, and created saints and cardinals according to its necessities. And so because Michel the Angel was a saint, the great Buonarroti was Michel the Angel, as more than one poet has celebrated him, and more than one artist has thought of him, looking upon his unexampled and unapproachable works.
