This novel tells the exciting saga of David and Anna Hershal, a mother and son fleeing Austria just ahead of pursuing Nazis. They reach America, where Anna establishes a vast clothing empire. Meanwhile, David masters the martial arts and in 1938, joins the army at age fifteen. Stationed in the Philippines, he is involved in a Moro insurrection aimed at the assassination of General Douglas MacArthur and Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower.
