The nation's undersupply of physicians continues to be a problem amplified by the Nation's population growth and the increasing de mands for medical care, including care for the aged and the deprived. In 1968, active physicians in the United States totaled but this number included those engaged in medical research, education, and administration, as well as those performing health services. Esti mates indicate that additional physicians are needed to provide adequate health care to the people of the Nation.
The Division of Physician Manpower supports a variety of pro grams to increase the supply and to improve the education, utilization, and effectiveness of practicing physicians.
