On the box sat the driver, in a many-caped coat, a battered hat with a remnant of a cockade still attached to it, and a black cutty pipe, of rankest tobacco, in his mouth, while around were grouped the various hangers-on that habitually contrive to make a living, such as it is, by doing little or nothing in and about such households as that I shall presently have occasion to describe.
