For those of us born after World War II, the Holocaust has been a part of our collective memory from an early age. It's hard for us to conceive how the generation before ours must have felt as they first learned that such inhumanity was possible. The authors of this book may seem like we would have little perspective to offer on these events. We are not survivors or first-hand witnesses. But my grandmother, Marion S. Coleman, was given the daunting task of documenting and explaining these shocking images for posterity. As photographs arrived in London from military units and press photographers, Marion received them as captions editor for the Overseas Branch of the Office of War Information. Our intention in publishing No Denial is to present these pictures as they were first seen by much of the world, when the horrors that we now collectively describe by the once-obscure word "holocaust" were simply called "atrocities." -- from the preface by Charles C. Steinhice
