Tommo is neat, quiet, calm, and careful, and he plays lead trumpet in the school band. His best friend, Smelly, is a girl who is messy, noisy, rough, and impulsive, and she is a star player in the school football team. When the band and the football team go to the city to take part in their respective state-wide competitions, their unusual friendship is tested to the limit. After a disastrous mix up with the buses, the band turns up at the football field and the football team finds itself taking the stage holding a variety of musical instruments. Will Tommo end up with mud on his face? Will Smelly overcome stage fright and manage to get a sound out of Tommo's trumpet?
