The aphorism usually attributed to the French statesman Count Mirabeau, that Prussia was "not a country with an army but an army with a country", remains two centuries later a common way of introducing a discussion of 18th and 19th century Prussia.
This is a compilation edition of three wonderful 19th century series of colourful military costume plates, detailing the pre-unification Prussian Army, in accurately hand-coloured images, complete with lively commentary from expert Ray Westlake on each individual plate.
Over 400 military figures are shown in their 'natural surroundings': camping, in battle, on horseback, on the march, etc. This edition forms part of our developing range of books dedicated to uniformology.
