Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 3: September, 1913It is to be hoped that society control of our special journals would lay upon editors a sense of responsibility, a consciousness of judg ment by the profession, that would eliminate some of the most un worthy communications, which seem to be given place in privately controlled journals, simply to fill space and make the journal appear as large as its rivals. It is probable that an editor responsible to his colleagues for the good name of a scientific society in which they had a common interest would be more careful about admitting absolutely worthless papers than one whose responsibility ended with himself.
