In 1881 when the Harvard chapter celebrated its centennial, each of the twenty-three chapters was ih vited to send delegates with power to represent the chapter in a convention. At the meeting held at Cambridge, June 30, 1881, twelve chapters were rep resented by twenty-nine delegates. Nothing was done until a second meeting in New York, October 18, 1881, at which time the creation of a National Council and the adoption of a constitution were re commended. At a third meeting, at Saratoga Springs, September 6 and 7, 1882, the constitution was adopted, and since that time affairs have been managed by the organization known as the United Chapters of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
