Excerpt from Phonetic Readings in English

The first thing a foreigner has to do when he Wishes to ac'quire the correct pronunciation of English or any other foreign language, 'is to learn to pronounce the individual sounds. For this purpose a good teacher is essential. The best results are achieved by imitation of the sounds pronounced by the teacher aided by a study of phonetic theory (that is' to say, a study of the positions of the organs of speech in forming the correct sounds) and the practice of suitable exercises. The requisite ph'onetic theory with explanations. Of the usual faults of pronunciation 'heard from foreigners speaking English, and exercises for correcting these faults, will be found in the books mentioned on p. VIII. When the student is able' to pronounce tolerably well the isolated English sounds (a list of which is given on pp. V, VI) he is in a position to start reading phonetic texts.
