Principles of Greek Etymology, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Principles of Greek Etymology, Vol. 2The proof sheets of the present volume have had throughout the advantage of the revision of Professor Curtius. In addition to some minor additions and corrections, an important change has been made for this translation by the author in pp. 307 - 309, as a result of the discovery stated by him in his Studien Vol. VIII p. 465. The few additions and corrections which have been made by the translators have also received the author's sanction. The pages of the third German edition have been added in the margin, enclosed in brackets, for the convenience of students, as reference is made to that edition in several popular manuals. In the first volume this was the less necessary that the greater part of it was occupied with the lexico graphical arrangement of groups of words, to which reference is usually made by the number of the group. The character j has -been retained throughout for the palatal spirant, denoted in English by y. This has been done mainly in order to bring clearly before the reader the identity of this use of the character with that which is common in Latin words. But it is believed that it will also be of advantage to the student thus to become familiar with the sign invariably used for this. Sound in German works on philology. We cannot omit this opportunity of calling attention to the Rev. W. W. Skeat's 'hand-list of some Cognate Words in English, Latin, and Greek', which contains the English representatives of many of the roots discussed in these volumes. The numbers in the indexes' refer throughout to the pages of the fourth edition of the German work, which will be found, not enclosed in brackets, in the margin.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
