Excerpt from Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Annual Convention of the American Water Works Association, Held at Louisville, Kentucky, June 3-7, 1912

The city of Laodicea in Phrygia was supplied with water by an aqueduct, about 5 miles long, which was probably built about 260 B. C. The crossing of a deep valley on the line of this conduit was effected by an inverted siphon, consisting of two lines of stone pipes.
