One evening early in April a strong, robust York shire woman, of the type often to be seen in the West Riding of Yorkshire, stood before her fire.

Aye, thee's burning foine, she said, addressing the fire, and smiling benevolently at the ¿ames as they ascended, clear and straight, up the chimney.
