Stanley, Edwin James

Rambles in Wonderland, or Up the Yellowstone, and Among the Geysers, Canons, Cataracts, Forests, Lakes, Mammoth Springs, Mud Volcanoes, and Boiling Cauldrons of the National Park

Excerpt from Rambles in Wonderland, or Up the Yellowstone, and Among the Geysers, Canons, Cataracts, Forests, Lakes, Mammoth Springs, Mud Volcanoes, and Boiling Cauldrons of the National Park: Containing Descriptions of This Recently Explored Region, Sketches of Indian Customs and Traditions, Thrilling Adventures, and Anecdotes and Incidents of Camp-Life in the Mountains

ON my return from a trip to the Yellowstone and through the National Park, I concluded to writeup a few brief sketches Of the more interesting features of that remarkable region, and the thrilling events of the journey, for the benefit of friends in the States. In spite of all efforts to condense, the brief sketches grew into a series of long letters, some Of which appeared in a leading newspaper Of the West. The general favor with which the letters were received, prompted a request for their publication in book-form. With some hesitancy the' work of revision was commenced, and this volume is the Tesult. It makes no claim to special literary merit, but is sent out. With the firm belief that it will fill a place hitherto unoccupied, and with the hope that it will afford instruction and entertainment to the lovers of Nature everywhere, especially the youth of the land.
