Registrum Ludovici De Charltone, Episcopi Herefordensis, A. D. 1341-1370 (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Registrum Ludovici De Charltone, Episcopi Herefordensis, A. D. 1341-1370The exhaustion and torpor which crept over England during the concluding years of the reign of Edward III very clearly mark the history of the eight years of Bishop Charlton's rule. The ordinary duties of a diocesan, duly and regularly performed, are alone recorded, the domestic affairs of the diocese include little of interest, and the enjoined obsequies of the Duke of Clarence2 and a letter from William of Wykeham are the only links with contemporary history. The latter had been presented in 1361 by the king to a pension extorted from the bishop nove crcacz'oms racione, one of several expedients adopted for paying the king's clerks without prejudice to the royal purse, and within two years resigned it in favour of John Tiverton, who at once accepted a capital sum in lieu of the annuity and the prospect of a benefice in the future.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
